Fireproof your Marriage.
I resisted watching this film for two years. I was unjustifiably critical and unwilling to sit through another ‘relationship movie’ …
After the gentle cajoling of my wife, we sat down together and I was drawn into the raw and realness of the marriage conflict unfolding before me. Powerfully portrayed. No easy fixes and no fairy tale turn-arounds complete with betrayed emotions, fiery finger-pointing, gnawing irritations, digital-adultery, and total meltdowns in the face of half-hearted attempts to reconcile. The main character (played by Kirk Cameron) had to deal with his own unavoidable guilt and failures, while the audience also witnesses his wife’s infidelity and bitter manifestations.
The crisis of personal faith and repentance was authentic and central. Refreshing.
The eternal value of the vow. The power of unconditional commitment and resolve to stay together. Watching how that resolve ‘to love’ unconditionally provides the unchanging foundation that alone can allow the joy and passion to increasingly flow on the shores of deeper intimacy, forgiven vulnerability, and unity.
No more spoilers, but simply that after watching I felt irreversibly convinced that I had to put this movie into the hands of every couple I marry.
I have purchased 150 copies with more to come.
